Flatbed vs Regular Towing: Which Is Better for Your Car?

When your car needs to be towed, you have two main options: regular towing (wheel-lift) and flatbed towing. Both move your car from A to B, but the method makes a real difference to your vehicle's safety, your wallet, and how the car arrives at the other end. In Pakistan, where road conditions range from smooth motorway to potholed service road within the same kilometre, the choice matters more than it would elsewhere.

What Is Regular (Wheel-Lift) Towing?

A wheel-lift truck slides a metal yoke under either the front or rear axle and lifts those two wheels off the ground. The other pair stays on the road and rolls freely during transport. This works well when the driven wheels are the ones being lifted: front-wheel-drive cars towed from the front, or rear-wheel-drive cars towed from the rear. The non-driven wheels spin without engaging the gearbox, so nothing gets damaged.

The problem comes with AWD or 4WD vehicles. All four wheels connect to the transmission. Dragging two of them on the road while the car is in motion puts stress on the transfer case, centre differential, and CV joints. Short distances at low speed may be fine, but a 20 km tow through city traffic can cause real mechanical damage that costs far more to fix than the price difference between towing methods.

What Is Flatbed Recovery?

A flatbed truck has a hydraulic platform that tilts down to ground level. Your car is driven or winched onto the bed, all four wheels sit on the platform, and the vehicle is strapped down with ratchet tie-downs and wheel nets. The car rides completely off the ground with zero tyre contact on the road surface during the entire journey.

This is the safest method. No drivetrain stress, no tyre wear, no risk of the car swinging or fishtailing behind the truck. It is the only safe option for AWD vehicles, lowered cars with body kits, luxury vehicles you want to protect, and any car with undercarriage or suspension damage that would make rolling on two wheels risky.

Cost Comparison in Pakistan

Wheel-lift towing is slightly cheaper because the equipment is simpler and the loading is faster. In Islamabad and Rawalpindi, regular towing starts from around Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 8,000 for short distances. Flatbed recovery typically starts from Rs. 8,000 and goes up depending on distance and vehicle size. The gap is usually a few thousand rupees at most. When you compare that to the cost of replacing a damaged transfer case or repairing drivetrain wear caused by incorrect towing, the flatbed works out cheaper almost every time.

When Wheel-Lift Towing Is Fine

  • Your car is front-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive (not AWD/4WD)
  • The tow distance is short, a few kilometres to the nearest workshop
  • The car has no body damage blocking the yoke from hooking under the axle
  • Cost is a concern and the vehicle is not high-value or modified

When You Need a Flatbed

  • Your car is AWD or 4WD (Fortuner, Sportage, Tucson, Prado, etc.)
  • The car is lowered, has a body kit, or sits close to the ground
  • It is a luxury, classic, or high-value vehicle
  • The car has collision damage and cannot roll safely on its own wheels
  • You are transporting inter-city (Islamabad to Lahore, for example)
  • You want the safest option regardless of cost

Hill and Mountain Towing: Flatbed Every Time

One situation where the choice is not even close: hill roads. On the climb from Ghora Gali to Murree, or the descent back to Islamabad, a car on a wheel-lift pushes the tow truck from behind on every downhill stretch. That extra force lengthens braking distance and makes the rig harder to control on wet or icy bends. A flatbed keeps all four wheels on the platform, so the car's weight sits directly over the truck's axles. Slower to load, but far safer to drive. If you break down anywhere in Murree or the Galyat area, flatbed recovery is what we send. See our Murree car recovery page for details.

Our Recommendation

For most situations in Pakistan, we recommend flatbed recovery. The roads between Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Murree include stretches with potholes, speed bumps, and uneven surfaces that make wheel-lift towing riskier than it would be on smooth highways. The cost difference is small, but the protection for your vehicle is significantly better.
